This 1964 Targa Florio Art Shirt captures the winning Porsche 904, which in true "giant killer" fashion, defeated the Ferrari 250 GTO, the 250 GT SWB, Shelby Cobra 289 and more.
In addition to an original illustration, I sought out the extremely rare 1964 event poster, and repurposed the typography, integrating it into this new design illustrated from archival photos of the race.
An interesting backstory to the win: Enzo, unscrupulous as ever, boycotted the race as officials refused to allow his all new mid-engined 250 LM Coupe to be entered in the GT class. Homolgomation rules dictated that GT class cars be produced in numbers of 100 and more, and there were only approximately 3 LM Coupes built to date, so the car qualified only as a prototype. Enzo argued that because it had "250" in the name, it was a continuation of the front engined 250 GTO (it was not). With that decision by Targa Florio officials, Enzo threw his toys out of the cart and the only Ferrari entries for 1964 were privateer racers.
Factory entries or not, it was an EPIC accomplishment for the smaller Porsche defeating the vastly more powerful cars to take not only the overall win, but both 1st and 2nd with the 904's (and a third 904 finished 6th!). The first place #86 car of Antonio Pucci/Colin Davis took 1st with the incredible margin of 13 minutes! Followed by the #84 904 of Gianni Balzarini/Herbert Linge (who's part in Porsche history I recognized in my book Destined for Victory), in 2nd place.
The 1964 Targa Florio Art Tee is printed on a soft and lightweight, light gray premium combed cotton tee. Think more Ralph Lauren / Banana Republic – and less neighborhood car show shirt / 80 grit sandpaper.
